Former Australian cricketer Andrew Symonds dies in car accident after a single-vehicle crash near Townsville in northeastern Australia. He is 46 years old.
Cricket Australia reported cricketer Andrew dies accident’ on its website on Sunday, citing a police statement detailing Saturday night’s accident.
It described Symonds as “a cult hero at the peak of his international career and one of the most skilled all-rounders Australian cricket has ever seen.”
“The Queenslander was a legend and attracted a wide fan base in his prime, not only for his tough approach, but also for his Larry King role.”
Symonds played 198 one-day international for Australia and won two World Cups
Symonds played 26 Test matches for Australia and played for two centuries, but he is better known as a Limited Play specialist. He played 198 one-day internationals for Australia and won two World Cups.
After retiring, Symonds became a popular commentator on the Cricket Broadcasting Corporation.
Queensland Police said the accident happened in the Hervey Ranges, about 50km (30 miles) from Townsville.
“Early information indicated the vehicle was travelling on Hervey Range Road near the Alice River Bridge shortly after 11pm when it left the road and rolled over,” the police statement said. “Emergency services attempted to resuscitate the 46-year-old. driver and sole passenger. However, he died of his injuries.”
Symonds’ family has called for privacy.
Former Australia captain Alan Budett was among those paying tribute to Symonds on Sunday.
Bird said Symonds “hit the ball far and just wanted to have fun.
“He’s kind of like an old-fashioned cricketer in a way,” Border told Nine. “He’s an adventurer, he likes to fish, he likes to hike, he likes to camp, and people like his laid-back style.”
That style saw Symonds clash with authority later in his career. In 2008, when he was called to a team meeting, he missed Australia’s one-day series against Bangladesh after going fishing. Before the 2009 Twenty20 World Cup, he was also disciplined for breaking team rules regarding alcohol.
With dreadlocks and zinc cream on his face, Symonds has always looked dazzling in the Australian team.
His loss was yet another blow for Australian cricket after legendary leg spinner Shane Warne died in Thailand in March. Wicketkeeper Rod Marsh also died in March at the age of 74.
