He is probably the most well-known name when it comes to American football coaching. This may be largely thanks to the popular game series, aptly titled Madden.

When he became the coach of the Oakland Raiders at just 32 years old, he had already held a series of coaching jobs and won the head coaching position in 1969. From 1960 to 1960, he served as an assistant coach and head coach at Allen Hancock College. In 1963, he served as defensive coordinator at San Diego State University and as linebackers coach with the Oakland Raiders, eventually becoming the team’s figurehead. His win rate is 76.3%.

7- Josh McDaniels

Josh McDaniels

He is the current offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, which is why he has so many Super Bowl wins! He started in all six wins during Brady’s time at quarterback. Talk about a good time!

When McDaniels took over as head coach of the Denver Nuggets in 2009, he replaced Mike Shanahan and shouldered a heavy responsibility. He signed a four-year, $8 million contract. His tenure as head coach was marked by controversy and disagreements between him and some key players. That includes his quarterback Jay Cutler and his wide receiver Brandon Marshall. Ultimately, McDaniels did not complete his contract and moved to the St. Louis Rams as offensive coordinator in 2011.

McDaniels’ father, Tom McDaniels, has been described as an Ohio high school football legend. Attending practices and watching his father’s passion for the game inspired him to do the same. Josh’s brother, Ben McDaniels, is currently the coach of the Houston Texans.

David Shula

If that last name sounds familiar, that’s because David Shula is the son of Hall of Fame coach Don Shula. To this day, Don remains the only coach to go undefeated in the 1972 Super Bowl-winning season with the Miami Dolphins.

David’s success never came close to his father’s, with an overall record of 19-52. After a 1-6 start to the 1996 season, the Bengals fired Shula, who had the misfortune of holding the title of fastest coach to lose 50 games.

David and his father played against each other twice, both games in Cincinnati. The home field advantage didn’t bother the Senior Shula team as it won both games, known as the Shula Bowl.

5- Raheem Morris

Raheem Morris

Morris had one Super Bowl win as a defensive assistant under John Gruden. After Gruden was fired in 2009, Morris took over as head coach. To say it had a shaky start would be an understatement. Their first win came in Week 9, after going 0-7.

Morris achieved redemption the following season, finishing with a 10-6 record and just shy of the playoffs.

John Michelosen

Micheloson served as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers for three years (1948-1951). During his tenure, he achieved a record of 20 wins, 26 losses and 2 losses. A native of Pittsburgh, he grew up in suburban Ambridge, Pennsylvania. While Michel Rosen’s career isn’t worthy of a double-take, he is considered a major influence on future NFL greats such as Mike Ditka and Marty Schottenheimer, both of whom were Pittsburgh natives.

More influential and significant than any record was his involvement in the civil rights movement. He led the first team to break the color barrier in the 1956 Sugar Bowl when they fielded an African-American player.

Harland Svare

During his professional football career, he can be likened to a professional globetrotter. He has traveled throughout the league and joined many teams as a player and coach. As a player, Swale spent eight seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants. He was the 204th overall pick in the 17th round of the 1953 draft.

In 1956, he oversaw championship-level success as a member of the NFL champion New York Giants.

Swale received a five-year coaching contract from San Diego Chargers owner Eugene V. Klein. At the time, this was an unpopular decision. The controversy surrounding the offer may have influenced Sware’s decision to leave next season.

2- Lane Kiffin

Lane Kiffin

He was hired by Raiders owner Al Davis in January 2007. His hiring makes him the youngest coach in Raiders history, ahead of John Madden, barely making this top 8 list!

There were rumors that Davis was impatient with the team’s eventual success, and after a rough season that ended with a 4-12 record, Davis reportedly tried to force Kiffin to resign. A very public dispute ensued, involving insults, accusations of lying and more. At this point, everyone saw the ominous omen. In September 2008, Kiffin was fired over the phone.

Kiffin finished his career with a 5-15 record. Whether this is a matter of incompetence as a coach or simply a victim of the harsh environment around him is debatable. Nine times out of ten, it takes time for the team to adapt and build a culture of trust and good chemistry. Unfortunately, Kiffin never got that opportunity.

He is the youngest coach in NFL history!

McVay became the head coach of the Los Angeles Rams in 2017 when he was only 30 years old. If that wasn’t impressive enough in itself, McVay also led his Rams to Super Bowl LIII, where they had the misfortune to face Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

After McVay took over, the Rams posted their first winning record since 2003 and made the playoffs for the first time since 2004. What he accomplished in such a short period of time earned him the Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year award.

Because of McVay’s success at such a young age, a phenomenon known as the “Sean McVay Effect” arose. After learning this news, NFL teams changed their minds, believing that a younger, fresher, more modern way of playing could lead to greater creativity on the football field, which meant greater success. Not to mention, the younger the coach, the easier it is to relate to young players.
